Under the Mistletoe: Christmas Candy and Sweet Buffet

Sweets for a sweet tradition!

Your Wedding and Event Consultants Principles in Action are all geared up for festivities! We love adding new and unique moments to your events to make them all the more memorable. This Christmas, our expert Ansonya Burke is sharing her favorite Christmas candy and sweet buffet ideas with you for you to take inspiration from…

If there is one occasion that I enjoy (and I’m sure all of you out there too!), it’s the holiday season. While you may be serving pudding, turkey and mince pies (all truly heavenly delights) why not add a bit of change to the menu this year?

As a wedding and event planner, I’m always on a lookout for great and unique ideas to share with everyone. This Christmas and New Year I loved the idea of presenting a sweet treat of candy buffets to enjoy with family and friends.

There is no hard-and-fast rule that you’d have to serve candy buffets at weddings only, why not create a magnificent candy and sweet buffet for your guests this Christmas or New Year’s party. I am sure everyone is going to adore the gesture.

Here’s a list of few “WH” questions that I ask myself each time I’m organizing  a candy or sweet buffet for an event… here’s hoping you’ll find them as handy as I do.

·         Which color to use?

Well, I’d say since it’s a season’s celebration party, why not keep everything bright and hip? While red and white are Christmas colors, you can play around with green and even the mellow pink to depict a cheery outlook! But I advice not to keep the candy buffet setting too red, or too white; you have to match the décor and create an eye-candy for guests!

You don’t really have to build a theme when you’re planning a holiday party (Christmas or New Year) considering it’s a theme in itself!  However, you can show off the artistic bug in you with almost any color you like as long as your sweets are looking savory and taste sweet. Even black wouldn’t look so bad as long as you decorate the buffet table chicly.

·         Where to set up?

Now this is one question, I am sure no one really bothers about until the very moment they set it up (and then it’s too late to take off the candy buffet decorations). I strongly advise that you don’t just place the candies here and there; create a proper buffet table to let your guests feel the difference to your party.

Setting up near or at the dinner table is a big NO!  You can create one anywhere (like even on your kid’s writing table!), so space shouldn’t be an issue. However, you are advised to decorate it so it speaks of your aesthetic abilities.  Remember you are inviting people to try out the candies you put out for them, so do it in a charming way.

·         When to set up?

If you are expecting kids at the party, well, you need to know kids and candies is a terrible combination. They’re sure to ruin the decorations before you can say “Merry Christmas!”

Hire a helper to set and stand by the candy buffet table, so kids don’t make a killer mess out of it! It is better to plan ahead, than to cry at spilled candies!

In addition, you can place gift bags for parents to pack their kids favorite candies for them to take back home. Festivities like this incite generosity, and there’s nothing better than to put a smile on a kid’s face this holiday season!

Real Wedding: Jackie & Sam, May 14th, 2011

“I dreamed of a wedding of elaborate elegance,
A church filled with family and friends.
I asked him what kind of a wedding he wished for,
He said one that would make me his wife.”

~Author Unknown

San Antonio wedding consultants Principles in Action had the privilege of helping another blessed couple in creating their dream wedding. This time, it was Jackie and Sam, who chose Ansonya, our Wedding Expert here at Principles in Action to assist them with their wedding management. Ansonya is pleased to recall here those magical moments with her readers…

The ceremony was held at the magnificent St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

The bride looked amazing all thanks to Madame Make-Up and Hair to compliment her strapless ivory mermaid gown; all in line with the Rustic Romantic theme for her wedding reception.

Principles in Action consulted with San Antonio Floral Designs to create the floral arrangement as required by the bride and groom for their Rustic Romance. And what they provided was clearly something to fall in love with….

The reception was held at Gardens at West Green, a day event beginning with entertainment by Mariachi Azul de San Antonio while the ceremony music was provided by String Music.

The event was truly a depiction of a romantic journey ahead of Jackie and Sam, and the guests felt it at the beautiful reception set for them.

How, you ask?

The addition of candy and sweet buffets really livens up the party and has now become an “eye candy” for all the guests. It gives tradition of serving favors a little backseat as guests get to pick their favorite treats from the mixture.

This sweet gesture might turn sour if you’re not doing it right. Since we, at Principles in Action, have been providing candy and sweet buffets to a number of customers (much to their contentment), we’ve jotted a few do’s and don’ts of creating a candy buffet.

DO plan ahead

DON’T leave it at the last minute!

Candy buffet may be the sweetest touch to your event yet you clearly don’t want to take it lightly. There are multiple things attached to the setting of the candy buffet. The last thing you would want is rushing to meet deadlines, forgetting to add your favorite candy in the lot, or rather forgetting the candy buffet altogether!

DO have enough candies/sweets at the buffet

DON’T overdo it!

Nothing truly suggests your lack of interest in your own party when someone comes up to you and says they never even got a glimpse of candy let alone the buffet! You want people to beg for more, but of course not literally! Have enough of each type so that your guests go home contented with their candy and pleased with your planning.

DO match the décor

DON’T make it look out of place

There is a reason why theme events have a theme-so you can plan each and everything accordingly. So why ruin the décor with an out of place buffet table decoration? If you are planning a birthday party, a rustic vintage look is so out of question (unless it’s Grandma Maple’s birthday!).

Use color thematic if you are unsure about how to decorate with a theme. Pastels work best for weddings and anniversaries, whereas you can enhance the décor with bright and bold colored candies and sweets for birthdays and bar mitzvahs.

DO label the candies

DON’T let guests play “guess the lolly”

As much tasty as the “chocolate covered cockroach clusters” may be, it’s going to make Grandma Maple apprehensive about whether or not to give it a try. It is vital you label the candies to ensure that your guests know what they’re eating. Remember, some of them might be allergic to an ingredient (nuts specifically!) so let them know in advance so the candy doesn’t create any sour moments!
